Introduction

Hello! My name is Tyler Mann. I am a senior studying Geographic Information Science. I was born and raised in Oklahoma and have lived in Moore for most of my life. I did live in the city of Garland, Texas for six years when I was younger but my family moved back to Oklahoma. I graduated from Moore High School in 2004 and yes, that means that I am 29 years old (don't remind me). I originally attended the University of Oklahoma for two years, completing most of the general education requirements but I was never able to decide on a degree that I was happy with. I decided to leave the university setting and join the workforce. I worked a number of different jobs in various fields while patiently looking for new degree and career plans. I finally learned about my current degree and returned to complete my studies in 2012.

My niece and myself

I thoroughly enjoy spending time outdoors, away from the city. Things can get pretty quiet and it's almost as if time slows down a little. Nature can be astoundingly beautiful if you're willing to slow down and appreciate it, whether it's enjoying the birds in your backyard, a famous landmark, or the untouched wilderness. I took the following photo of the Grand Canyon years ago while on vacation.

Grand Canyon in mid morning
The name is quite fitting and pictures really just don't do it justice. This particular vacation had an impact on me in terms of how I looked at the world. We visited a number of places including Yellowstone National Park, Bryce Canyon, and of course the Grand Canyon. This trip instilled in me a love and respect for nature and natural beauty.

Apart from spending time outdoors I also enjoy any type of activity that involves marksmanship. Shooting sports can be fun and challenging at the same time. Testing yourself in any capacity can help keep your mind sharp.

  1. Hi Tyler! I have to completely agree about the Grand Canyon. I just visited this year in May, and I agree that pictures just don't do it justice. Did you get time to hike into the Canyon at all? I went a little ways down the Bright Angel trail with my dad, and it's even more beautiful once you get a little ways in. Before I left I mentally added hiking all the way into the canyon to my bucket list. I can only imagine how amazing camping there must be. I haven't been to Yellowstone or Bryce Canyon, but I'd love to go to both!

  2. Hello Tyler! Do not worry about ages because we all keep learning during our entire lives. Keep learning can make our brain age slower.
The photo of the Grand Canyon is stunning! I wish I could drive to there and take couple pictures. Could you give me some advises about travelling in the Grand Canyon? How many people are good for the visit? Is summer time a good time to visit?

  3. Oh wow, Tyler, I did not even know that Geographic Information Science was a major. That sounds SO COOL. My husband (now retired) worked in the Meteorology school, so I sometimes heard about geography things; he was always telling me about the cool research people were doing both in Meteorology and in Geography. Very exciting! And you already know that I am fascinated by your perspective on the epics as someone who does archery. You'll be meeting that bow of Shiva very soon, and just this weekend, I was working on a cool legend about Shiva as an archer and how he destroyed the three celestial cities with a single shot... pretty amazing stuff. If you are curious about that legend, it is here: Shiva had a bow made of a giant mountain and the string was the cosmic serpent Vasuki:

  4. Hello Tyler. I can definitely relate to you on being a little older than the average undergraduate student. I am 25 and I went to OU from 2008-2009 and then left but came back in 2012 to finish my psychology degree. I also love the outdoors. I have always wanted to see the Grand Canyon but haven't made it there yet. Hopefully soon!

  5. Hey Tyler! I have always wanted to visit the grand canyon. I made it one of things I have to do before I graduate. So far I have only been to Niagara Falls. I can understand how the sheer vastness of nature can change your view of something. Did the grand canyon help you pick your major today? If so, that makes me want to go there even more.

  6. Hi Tyler!
I'm glad you found a degree that you are happy with. Your niece is so adorable. My cousin is about to have a baby girl and I cannot wait. The picture you have of the grand canyon is beautiful! My church actually visited the grand canyon this summer but I was not able to go because of my summer classes. I am also a huge of nature. I wish you the best in your future endeavors!

  7. Hey Tyler!
I enjoy spending time outdoors as well. I have been to the Grand Canyon once. It was beautiful! I agree with you that pictures of it do not do it justice. It has been a while since I have been there; I kind of want to go back. I have never been to the Yellowstone National Park but I have always want to visit it! I look forward to reading more of your posts!

  8. Hi Tyler! Well it sounds like you are truly an Okie even though you lived in Texas for awhile. Did you enjoy your time in Texas? I am originally from north Texas. I enjoy getting out and being outside. Something my fiancé and I love to do is go out to his family friend's land and shoot guns at various targets. There is nothing like being outside.

  11. I agree nature is incredible. One of my favorite places to go is in Creede Colorado! We stay in a log cabin with no electricity there. It's be the best.

Thats really awesome that you find something that sparks your curiosity. School is to expensive to just fool around sadly. I completely get where you are coming from. I switched majors and schools.

  12. I agree with you completely about the Grand Canyon. Pictures do not come close to communicating the magnitude of the place. It was breathtaking to watch the sunset there. Did you get to walk out on the Skywalk? Congratulations on finding your degree! It sounds like it really fits with your interests. Best of luck as you finish up your studies!

  13. I went to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone this summer and you are completely right about the pictures not doing it justice. It's so vast it's impossible to capture in a photo! My favorite time was at night when you could look into the canyon and it just looked endless. So amazing!

I'm glad you were finally able to find something that interested you! Deciding on a major is difficult, but it's nice when you finally find something you're passionate about! Good luck with the rest of the semester and with the rest of your studies!

  14. That's great that you found something that you will actually enjoy making a career out of. I switched my major after my second year (and ended up dropping classes and wasting money in the process). I also am a huge fan of the outdoors. My favorite thing to do is scuba dive, but I think if I had to chose between that and the mountains, I would take the mountains. The last trip I went on was Estes Park, Colorado. I haven't been to the Grand Canyon yet, but it is definitely on my list. Good luck with the rest of your degree!
